I keep reading all this posts and articles praising "non-binary individuals", people who decide to wear make-up or decide not to shave their legs, people who use they/them pronouns to identify themselves. Who the fuck even cares? Why would you want to force people to accommodate to your choice of pronouns? People always seem to forget that their individual freedom ends when that of others begin and that is what they don't fully grasp. I honestly feel that if what you identify yourself as is the first thing you want people to know about you, then YOU are the one giving your gender (or lack there of) too much importance, not society. If you are against society's beauty standards, the patriarchy or traditional roles that's great! I'm all about non-conforming to others expectations and about expressing yourself in whichever way you might see fit. I truly am. But the thing is people don't realize that choosing certain words over others is still a choice. They are still choosing to be defined by words, molded by them. Why anyone would want to let themselves be put in tiny labelled vials is beyond me. As a linguist and a lover of words I believe words serve a purpose. Words are meant to help us communicate, to describe what we feel and who we are, but I refuse to limit myself to beautiful cages and beautiful sounds. I am so much more than a word. I am so much more than a pronoun. I am so much more than my gender. I am so much more. So much more.
