. . #KlausSperber (January 24, 1944 – August 6, 1983), better known as #KlausNomi was a ‘New Wave opera singer’ who died of AIDS at @sloankettering, New York. He was 39 years old. . Born in Immenstadt, Bavaria, Nomi worked as an usher in the 1960’s at the @deutscheoperberlin and also sang opera arias at the Kleist-Casino, a gay disco. In 1972, at the age of 28, Nomi relocated to New York and began his involvement with the East Village art scene. He took singing lessons and supported himself working as a pastry chef. . Nomi came to the attention of New York City's art scene in 1978 with his performance in ‘New Wave Vaudeville’ an event MC'd by artist #DavidMcDermott. In the late 1970s while performing at #Club57, #TheMuddClub, and #PyramidClub, Nomi assembled a group of models, singers, artists and musicians to perform live with him including@joeyariasnyc, @Basquiat, #KeithHaring, #JohnSex and @KennyScharf. He also appeared on Manhattan Cable's TV Party. . @DavidBowie heard about Nomi's performances and met him and Arias at #theMuddClub. Bowie hired them as performers and backup singers for his appearance on @nbcsnl which aired on December 15, 1979. . In the last several months of his life, Nomi changed his focus to operatic pieces. He adopted a Baroque era operatic outfit complete with full collar as his on-stage attire.
