Epic Weekend - Seven Sounds!
We at TheMousist.co.za love capturing event photos and people. We love weddings and photo book albums.
What started as just another jol in one of the most arty sections of Johannesburg - where The Muffinz, Matthew Mole and 5 other bands where playing ended on a Mariah Carey - actually the note was a tad bit higher than hers.
We were there to witness it all as it unfolded - such surrealism begged for Dali's presence.
The urban park Common Ground was the perfect location to stage such a show; the ambience was great for a hang out and networking; the bands oozed so much kifness we forgot it was sunny and the wits of the MC - who will never ever mispronounce the diverse Nakhane Toure's name or any other artists' - kept us entertained between the breaks. Mother nature loved the show too - more on that in the next few paragraphs.
Seven Sounds is a definite must-see or do for the music lovers who appreciate and enjoy a diverse collection of musical genres.
We were the first two to arrive there altough we missed Matthew Mole's set, we caught some of Shotgun Tori's and we are pretty sure everyone caught on to the last two joints that she performed - especially the bold hook on "Fcuking Therapist". The Muffinz set - although short-lived - plucked at mother nature's heartstrings, so much so that she cried everytime their songs reached a climax.
This happened on "Sound Check", "Have You Heard" and their rendition of the legendary Brown Dash's "Vum Vum". It seems things got really heavy for her after the kwaito medley and she made it rain cats and dogs - living us with well - half a muffin - and an unbelievable experience to share about the exceptional musicians and performers these gentlemen are.
We caught the last song of Guy Buttery's acoustic set which was just as unprecedented and saw the amazing Tidal Waves for the first time.
Now these guys are raw talent and their sound - roots reggae inter-weaved with elements of dub with a dash of ska - was in some songs so reminscent of the sounds of Tiago and Paulo of 340ML - especially "Money".
We loved their music and the energy they presented it with - they kept us on our toes with Bing Bong.
Nakhane Toure was amazing - it was our first time experiencing his music - it's very deserving of all the nominations and accolades he has received. It's how he starts of his songs that really captivated us - he performed alone accompanied by all his gadgetry yet it felt like he brought a full band - very impressive automation and songwriting. We are definitely buying his sophomore album and Brave Confusion.
The Runaway Train Cult pulled of the most diverse set compared to all the acts - throwing in some swing, folk music, pop, some R&B, gospel and rock elements.
It was their impromptu collaboration (Video Above) with The Muffinz on a gospel number that set the house alight once more -
getting a nod once again from Mother Nature - only this time it was in the form of a double rainbow see image below.
7 February 2015 was a beautiful piece of history and we are honoured to having been there to witness it - God is a marvel!
