Vulcan Physiology; A Short Overview
Although Vulcans physically resemble humans, they are physiologically very different. Their bodies are adapted to live in a desert and to preserve heat and energy, and they originally evolved from cat like apes. Their planet, called T’Khasi in Vulcan language, has a greater gravity than earth and a thinner atmosphere. Vulcans are also three times stronger than humans because the greater gravity of their planet causes their muscles to be more attached to their skeletal system.
The Vulcan body can survive in the desert without food and water for ten days. They do not sweat, but absorb the moisture in their surroundings through their pores. They also have a secondary inner eyelid which they occasionally use to block out the light of the sun or other harmful light that is too bright. The use of this eyelid is directed by an involuntary nerve response.
Vulcans have their hearts where a human’s liver is positioned. This evolutionary development is so Vulcans would have a larger lung capacity in order to help them breathe oxygen more efficiently in a low oxygen environment. A Vulcan’s heart beats on average 250 beats per minute, one of the quickest of all humanoids. Caffeine and alcohol, as well as many other stimulants which effect humans, has little to no effect on Vulcan bodies. But, if sugar (namely, sucrose) is ingested, it can cause a Vulcan to become intoxicated similar to the effects of alcohol in humans.
Vulcans have developed many disciplines in order to maintain control over their own bodies and can regulate them much more efficiently than other humanoids. They can even heal themselves when injured or ill by going into a trancelike state called tow-kath.
Another unique ability of Vulcans is that they are natural touch telepaths. The strength of this ability varies by the individual, but very few are born esper blind. Bonded pairs are capable of sensing the thoughts and emotions of their bondmate over great distances. Some disciplined priests are also capable of telepathic contact over incredible distances. In ancient days before Reform, Mind Lords capable of such control were feared and revered. Before T'Khasi's destruction in present times, only a few priests of Seleya and Gol were capable of such mental gifts, and never used them for destructive purposes.
One question that is on the tip of every offworlder's tongue is in regard to the secretive mating practices of Vulcan adults. What we can share with you is that an adult male will go through a mating cycle once every seven years called the pon farr, but are actually fertile all year round. During pon farr, a male will lose control over their emotions and revert to a state of extreme passion until they are capable of mating. If not sated, the plak-tow or blood fever is usually fatal.
In a kun-ut kali-fi, the marriage or challenge ceremony, two males may fight to the death over a female if challenged during pon farr. The winner earns the female or the right to discard her. It is rare for a female to challenge, but still a possibility as it is one of the few means of divorce from a bonding. (It is also rare and relatively unheard of to have two females fight over a single male.) It is interesting to note that as bonded individuals are telepathically linked, they will go through pon farr at the same time.
An important thing to remember is that both of these subjects of pon farr and the koon ut kali-fee are incredibly personal and taboo in general and Vulcans will avoid to speaking about them even amongst each other.
