NORM LEWIS: THE BEST OF CHRISTMAS Norm Lewis’ is having a Christmas PARTY at 54 Below that will captivate and enchant! This is Norm Lewis’ 10th Christmas performance and there is a reason why every year his performances sell out and why he keeps coming back! He is not only a spectacular artist but also an amazing showman, AND he is having as much fun as we are!Norm Lewis listens. He listens to the songs and stories that live in the melodies and lyrics. Lewis understands the language of music and can manipulate and conjure with his voice its many mysteries and joys. As a singer, he can hold a note, shape it, and reimagine it as it moves throughout the room, capturing all in its spell. Humans are musical beings. The only other species that are inherently musical are whales and dolphins. How is that for a miraculous truth!Love for our fellow human beingsYou will rejoice in the traditional wonders of “It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Let There Be Peace on Earth,” “Santa Baby,” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” Norm Lewis’ drummer boy opens with his drummer Perry Cavari rocking it on the drums as if he himself were a boy with a mission to play for this blessed baby. Norm mixes the traditional Christmas music with the not-so-traditional “Bethlehem Morning” by Morris Chapman, “Home” from The Wiz, “Razzle Dazzle” from Chicago, “The Music of the Night” from The Phantom of The Opera, and two songs that are now my favorites, “We Live On Borrowed Time” and “Just Be Kind.” Those last two are songs we need to be singing to ourselves and one another daily. The lyrics are about acceptance, healing, and love for our fellow human beings. Norm Lewis. Courtesy 54below.orgHe is backed by his marvelous pianist and musical director, Joseph Joubert, and a fabulous band composed of Dylan Shamat on bass and Perry Cavari on drums. His director is the wonderful and funny Richard Jay Alexander. Richard was invited on stage to share some of his Norm Lewis stories, which had us all laughing. This is why it’s a party and not a show.He shares his gift with those who came before himNorm regales us with stories of his childhood growing up in Florida with his two siblings in a conservative religious home where playing card games, meaning Go Fish, Solitaire, and so on, was not allowed. He shares his gift with those who came before him and who he admires. He tells the hilarious story about the first time his family saw him perform in “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat.” They didn’t even know he was a singer let alone he could sing like THAT! In the audience are friends, some work-related and some family, and many audience members who have become part of that group of family and friends. The extra special surprise for all who attend the show, Norm Lewis: The Best of Christmas, is the featured guest appearance of Norm’s long time friend and colleague, Michael McElroy. Michael comes on to sing a duet with Norm – “Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer”! They wear reindeer horns! They are fabulous! Norm then gives Michael the space to sing solo and it is riveting.
