The sight of the kid propped up against the back of a nightclub was not what Charlie expected. Granted, he didn’t expect much when he went jogging around at night-- sure, he’d stopped at least three muggings in his life, but that wasn’t too big a deal-- but seeing some poor bastard drunk or high or both out of his mind was surprisingly low on the scale of expectations.
And, like, it’d be easy to leave the kid behind. Sure. Easy fuckin’ peasy.
But then he heard the soft whimper as he jogged past, and that had him freezing before he turned on his heel and stayed jogging in place.
Don’t do it, Sparre. You don’t have to be a fucking Samaritan to everyone you--
It was a shame Charlie wanted to be a good person. So he came forward and crouched by the kid’s body, watching his head loll and his lashes flutter and hating the smell on him, but wanting to be helpful all the same.
“Hey.” Could the guy hear him? Charlie didn’t know. He made his voice a little louder. “Hey, guy. You come out here with anybody?
“Can you hear me?”
