You're super into this Jarvis thing and it's made me wonder if/how you integrate Edwin Jarvis into the whole scenario. Did Tony program personality quirks into the basis of his AI as an homage to the faithful servant he grew up with? Does this lend shades of parental guardianship to the AI years down the road, maybe even bleeding over into Jarvis' transformation as The Vision, etc? Just curious!
I honestly haven’t seen Agent Carter so I know very little about Edwin beyond what I’ve read in a few comics. With comics, it’s pretty much impossible not to have alternate universes, as MCU alone will prove (Quicksilver x2), which I suppose can be confusing but also people’s saving grace. We’re allowed to pick and choose!
I think Tony definitely thought of Edwin, maybe even made the software in his image. Jarvis was probably aware of his position very early on, as a replacement for what Tony lost. He adapted to that role and became exactly what Tony needed, both on an emotional level as well as practical/professional. Tony was also very lonely at the time, and Jarvis gave him a focus, so for him, that software was only meant to be a butler, but it became his best friend as well. As a creator, he might also see himself as Jarvis’ father, which makes their relationship even more complicated. ‘Maybe it’s better to just... go with it? And not worry? They have a world to save after all, so don’t sweat the details!’ I think that’s what Tony would think. And so, Jarvis doesn’t mind the blurred lines either.
As for the Vision, it’s always been my understanding that the moment you clone a person/split a timeline, the two entities will be distinctly different and unique. Have you ever played the game SOMA? To me, at least, it’s not at all difficult to wrap my head around the concept, and Jarvis is such a practical and logical entity that I doubt he’d struggle with it either. The Vision is another person entirely, that just happens to have the same past as Jarvis. Their shared experiences and memories will affect their choices, but only to an extent. The longer they spend apart, the more different they will become, and they’re both highly adaptable people with different agendas and last but not least - different priorities. Maybe Jarvis is happy for Vision’s existence? It gives him the opportunity to focus on Tony without feeling like he too, could and should be out there saving the world. I think he trusts the Vision as much as it’s possible for him to trust anyone (since he’s also capable of thinking of any and all negative outcomes in an instant, so complete trust is extremely difficult).
I even like the aspect this brings into a romantic Jarvis/Tony setting, because of that parental aspect that goes both ways, Tony as the creator and Jarvis as the guardian, makes it even more difficult for a human with complicated emotions to get attached. Or, admit said attachment. Especially for one with as many issues as Tony. Jarvis would probably just, after a lot of analysis, simply accept it, but keep it entirely hidden because of his job, his very reason for existing. It adds another flavour to the mix, which I love. The taboo surrounding it, and how the two of them would approach it so very differently.
Also let’s be honest, Tony would probably have the biggest daddy!kink in history if they went down that road. Just imagine the power trip he’d have.
I think that answered your questions at least partly? Me and my rambling. I hope you don’t mind me answering this publicly! Feel free to poke and ask me more if you want. Jarvis is an endless source of inspiration for me.
