Second September Interview

I recently had the welcome chance to talk with Kira, theotheroneoverthere. While she hasn't written anything new for a while, she was once very active in the fandom and has produced such stories as Kat and Mouse and its sequel as well as some one shots.

Angela: Welcome to the jhutchdirectory interviews! I know it’s been a while since you’ve posted your main fanfics, but we wanted to showcase some of the past fanfic writers as well as some established writers and some new writers in our interviews. Thank you so much for agreeing to do the interview.

    Kira: I gotta say I’m more than a little bit flattered that you’d ask me, considering how old my first story is. Its gone from visiting older stories like “Stella” at ‘shady pines’ to makin eyes at the old harry potter fan fics sitting at the corner table.

  A: Absolutely! I’m excited to see what you have to say. First question…

  What is your writing process? Do you outline, write and edit later, make sure every sentence is perfect, write and let it sit, write and publish very quickly, or some combination?

    K: writing process? what is a writing process? In all seriousness I do have a mixture of processes, but the one that I prefer most is to write first, outline, then edit to the outline. It doesn’t seem to make much sense for most people, but it seems to work for me. That and it doesn’t freak me out so much when I don’t feel like I have a set story to stick to.

    A: I can understand the pressure. :)

  Where do you get your inspiration? Do you listen to music, watch movies/TV, have a quiet place to work, write it public?

    K: anywhere. It’s really up to my mood or when the muses strike me. I know that’s not much in the way of help or support for those aspiring writers out there, but when I try to force it to much, most of the time it comes out crap. As you can see some times I can write novels in only a few days, and other times it takes years. More often than not, it has everything to do with my personal life.

    A: Totally understandable. Real life is kind of a big deal.

  Is fanfiction your first foray into writing? If not, what else have you written?

    K: Actually no. I’ve written screenplays, scripts, poems and even had several of them published and produced. I won’t embarrass myself or my co-authors by mentioning any of them by name, but they were all varied and some of them even worth reading.

    A: Well, now I’m incredibly curious I’ll have to wheedle that information out of your for my own reading pleasure.

  How much do you weave Josh’s real life into your story? (interviews, public appearances, photos, family, etc.)

    K: RFP gets a lot of flack for being ‘stalker-ish’ and as a private person I sometimes cringe when I think about how much of his public information I managed to put into my drabbles and stories. But here’s the deal, he is a public figure. I use his likeness to craft a story. Like other writers and other things that I’ve written, this is a fictional take on my IDEA of him. I don’t know josh personally nor is it likely I’ll ever meet him. Instead I consider him a muse of sorts. His personality, his looks, his mannerisms (that he allows the public to see) are what I base my fictional creation of him off of. That said there is a lot of writers liberties that I take when writing, because I’m writing it. It’s my fictional depictions of who I think this character is. I have no delusions that what I’m writing is as Josh would act in real life.

    A: No matter how much we’d like to think he’s really the way he’s written sometimes, I’m sure.

  What advice would you give to other writers for writer’s block, editing, feedback, and story ideas?

    K: Writer’s block is hell, editing is even worse. Primarily because the both of them are about self-criticism… which ultimately leads me down a rabbit hole of self-hate, which is my own worst enemy. But as for feedback, even criticism, I seek it out heartily and often from friends, co-writers, family etc. Anyone who has an ear is a possible candidate. Story ideas? when a plot bunny arrives I’ll tell you about it, but for the most part they are just that. Fictional animals who are adorably infuriating due to their incredibly bad timing.

    A: Fictional animals. Love it.

  Are any of the events, places of people in your story connected to you in any way?

    K: No, not really… I mean some of the mannerisms, speech, even monologues are things that I’ve done or heard in my life, but otherwise they are not connected to me or my personal life.

    A: What has been your favorite part of your story/stories? Like if you had to pick a particular part, piece or chapter, which one would cause you to say, “man I gave that chapter my all”, or “this was the most pivotal part of my characters”.

    K: ugh. None of them? All of them? I can never tell until after… well after the fact when or how pivotal a plot point or chapter was. I’m always totally off when I try and guess it myself.

    A:  Do you have future projects? Can you give me a break down or share some of the plot for an upcoming fanfic?

    K: No future project in the works, sorry. My personal life has taken over and so the luxury of being able to write on the regular is something I don’t get to indulge in anymore.

    A: As a fan of your writing, this makes me very sad.

   If you could change something about your story, would you? And what?

    K: Everything? whenever I revisit my work after any stretch of time I see nothing but errors and plot holes. It’s pretty awful… which is why try my hardest not to revisit stuff unless the plot holes or errors are egregious.

    A: Alright, we have a couple of questions from tumblr user Lisa (myusernamehere).

  First, what do you think your signature style is?

    K: Long prose that goes on without pause or proper use of an oxford comma. I dunno what I’d consider my signature style… some of my writing has been compared to Chuck Palahniuk which kind of flatters and scares me too.

    A: Also from Lisa, when reading/writing, what do you look for in a story?

    K: Character development and subplot. I’m always interested in understanding what makes a character do what they do… and I love being surprised when I see something unexpected.

    A: If you could pinpoint one quality of Josh’s that is your favorite, what would it be? And also why?

    K: Wow….uhm….probably his uh… looks. I mean that’s all I really have to go on. the boy has a jaw that doesn’t quit, and his face does that whole… face thing… so well. As for personality… again I only know what he presents and what he presents to the public is pretty cool… but he’s young still, and so he could change. I’ll just be puddle deep for now and say he’s a sexy little nugget of smouldering goodness to fap to. (wow that sounded cleaner in my head….)

    A: That description of him sounds about right. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us. Hopefully some new members of the fandom can discover your writing.

I thought that too, but I wasn't gonna let that wreck the fantasy. this was a BIG influence on the Gadge outtake. Originally, he was going to take the chair and do this to her while she watched in the mirror. 

The book I'm reading right now has him use raspberries the same way. And yeah, I thought it too, but OMG was the scene hot.
