The Phil Silvers Show 2x23 "Rock 'n' Roll Rookie"

★★★★★★★★★☆

Dan Frazer. Very funny episode about a rock-and-roll superstar joining Bilko’s platoon. Tom Gilson plays a character very clearly based on Elvis Presley. The episode is structured like a succession of sketches, each one of them an elaborate scheme by Bilko to somehow cash in on the man’s talent and fame. Most are very good, particularly the one where Bilko himself grabs a guitar and sings a couple of verses from a song called “Brown Suede Combat Boots.” The ending, which is heartfelt and lovely, takes the episode up a notch. 9/10

The Phil Silvers Show 2x22 "The Son of Bilko"

★★★★★☆☆☆☆☆

Bob Kilgallen. Bilko is feeling paternal in this below par episode. It deviates enormously from formula after Ernie meets an old girlfriend and starts dreaming about the life he could have had. Next, an 18-year-old soldier transfers in. He’s a prankster and everyone hates him. Bilko decides to take the kid under his wing and pay father-figure. The thing is, the kid outsmarts him at every turn. Even in the final seconds of the story. With Bilko losing every step of the way, it doesn’t feel like a typical episode. And there are no big laughs. 5/10

The Phil Silvers Show 2x21 "Bilko's Television Idea"

★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Danny Dayton. Not as funny as it should be. The idea is terrific. It’s about a big TV star coming to Fort Baxter to research a sitcom about the army. Loads of scope for jokes about TV. And we get some great ones. But not a lot. The TV star is a jerk, and so it’s fun to see Bilko completely destroy his confidence. But, for whatever reason, there aren’t many laughs. Possibly because it took too long to get to the core of the episode’s central idea and/or because they really spent too much time on the dud sitcom idea that Bilko sold him. 7/10

The Phil Silvers Show 2x20 "Bilko Enters Politics"

★★★★★★★★☆☆

Margaret Hamilton. Good story in this one, with Bilko running Doberman for mayor in a small town and gradually winning everyone in town over to the idea. Bilko is a natural for politics. The ending is very clever. It’s one of those episode that relies on Maurice Gosfield for a lot of the laughs. 8/10
