Judge question, not a card question: As a judge, do you have to know how the rules *used* to work, or just the current version of the rules? For example, is how the "Legendary Rule" used to work required knowledge or just trivia?
No.
Judge candidates are only tested on rules and policy as they currently exist at the time of the test. There’s no expectation of historical knowledge.
While understanding how rules and policy worked in the past can be helpful to understand the evolution of the documents and the guiding philosophy behind them, it’s never required.
I'm still not clear on the answer you gave me regarding the manifest power/toughness. I'm looking at Ezuri, claw of progress's ability. I'm not sure if Formless Nurturing and Wildcall (x>0) will trigger an experience counter or not. My understanding is something like Kalonian Hydra would enter as a 4/4, not a 0/0, but The manifest wording looks different though.
The card is manifested and then counters are added. Ezuri will trigger since it enters the battlefield briefly as a 2/2. Same with the Germs from living weapon.
Normally, creatures that enter the battlefield with +1/+1 counters enter with that power and toughness, right? For Formless Nurturing and Wildcall, does the manifest enter as a 2/2 and then get the counters, or an X/X? The wording seems different on both those cards.
Face down permanents are always 2/2 creatures by default. The counters apply on top of that base power and toughness.
