Hi! How often do you judge RPTQs? I was reading about Magic tournament structure and saw they needed a L3, but didn't know what the expectation was for individual judges. Thanks!
I’ve been head judge of three RPTQs since becoming L3. It’s something I quite enjoy doing, but I’m located in the wrong place to do it more regularly since Helsinki never gets RPTQs.
My friend and fellow awesome judge Meg Baum recently had the opportunity to be a part of an all-woman judge team at GP Cleveland. She wrote about her experiences on that team, and I’m happy to share them here as well.
What's your opinion on judges making a ruling about a game they are playing in? Is there any official rule on the subject?
It’s fine at Regular REL, but they should call another judge if one is available.
So I applied for Grand Prix Cleveland (fingers crossed, hope I get accepted) and wondered if you had any advice for first time judges at GPs.
Take more breaks than you think you need. GPs are a lot of hard work, especially if you’re not used to walking around all day. If you need a break, just ask your team lead.
Drink more water than you think you need. GP venues are heavily air conditioned usually, and that dries you out. A good rule of thumb is to try to drink about a litre of water every three hours you’re working.
Ask questions. At a GP, you’re surrounded by lots of awesome judges with years and years of experience, and they’re usually more than happy to explain things to newer judges. Judges like to talk about judging. Crazy, eh?
Make friends! Those same judges from point 3 are usually interesting and nice people, and excellent potential friends. Use your time with them to get to know at least a few of them and make connections so that you’ll know more people at your next GP.
Be friendly to players. While this is a big, important tournament run at Competitive (and Professional) REL, the players are there to play Magic and have fun, just like at any other event. Do what you can to make sure the players you interact with are having a good time.

It's the end of an era. The old judge center is no more, soon to be replaced with something newer and better and less broken. While it was definitely time to update judge center, I'm sad to see the old site go. I spent so much time there. :(
Another judging question. How long is training, on average? Also related, what format are the tests (at least yours, anyway) and are they difficult? I told my friends about maybe becoming a judge and they all wanted me to go through with it so I want to make sure it's feasible to someone as mildly experienced as I am. (Also thanks in advance in case you end up answering more of my silly questions. I'm sure the community is with me when I say you're a great help)
There’s not really any formal judge training per se, at least for level 1. Some candidates are ready immediately and some need some mentoring to improve in certain skills.
All judge tests are multiple choice with 5 options. The level 1 test is 25 questions and the L2 and L3 tests are 50 questions. The tests are approximately 2/3 rules and 1/3 policy in terms of content.
