It feels a little surreal. As things often do that have been talked about and planned for months and years and have finally come to fruition. I’m not married and have never planned a wedding, but I imagine it feels similar. Except that this gym can be used for years to come and will help countless numbers of kids, and a wedding...won’t (nothing against weddings). A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the opening of a very special gym for very special kids. Created through funds from an incredible family in honor of their Supergirl who died last year from cancer, the gym will provide a space for rehab and play for kids going through treatment for cancer and related disorders. My OT colleague and I spent many hours with Supergirl and her family, helping with sitting, standing, crawling, and most importantly, playing. She was tiny and she was mighty. A true superhero, like so many of these kids who have stories and experiences far beyond their years. I spent the summer working with kids after working with people of all ages from January to May. I love kids. Working with kids is definitely my calling and while I think I knew this, it has been solidified this year. When I walked into the new gym, with natural light streaming in and IV pole toting alligators playing soccer on the wall, I felt like it was where I was supposed to be, if only for that minute. I didn’t know where I would be, what I would be doing, or if it would be possible to make it back for the opening but I am so glad I was there and able to witness it all first hand. Maybe someday I’ll treat in the gym and make more memories like the ones I have of Supergirl.
