Hello there and welcome to the second instalment of my current weekly blog series about the buildings I have featured in my paintings! I decided a while a go to pay tribute to some of the astoundingly beautiful buildings in Salford and Manchester.
**Quick key fact for you - the word ‘blog’ is a truncation of (clipping/morphology) the word ‘weblog’ or ‘website log’.**
The building I’m focussing on this week is The Printworks with a little history.
Situated next to Shudehill and the Northern Quarter in an interesting area called Withy Grove. It was originally built in 1873 as Withy Grove Printing House which ran successfully for over 100 years, with printing companies such as the Manchester Evening Chronicle and Daily Mirror.
The building became defunct in 1985 and the Manchester Bomb in 1996 began a cause for redevelopment, reopening in 2000 to what we know it to be today, especially with all the fabulous neon lights decorating the outside.
The interior is very interesting, there are tram lines still on the cobbled street inside. Initially, it feels dark and mysterious but soon feels vibrant and comes alive with all the lights from the bars and restaurants.
If you look up when you go for a walk inside the Printworks you’ll see a huge collection of signs painted on each establishment to act as a recreation of the printing companies warehouses such as Daily Dispatch Co, The Old Press Room, Printing Press Co which is painted with a factory skyline, Typesetters 1908, Evening Chronicle, No.8 A.B. Withy Publishing.
The reason I painted the Printworks is that it’s always been a building I’ve visited and liked in Manchester City Centre because of how much character it has, along with my personal favourite reason for going - the cinema or Japanese food and I know this is a favourite nightlife hub for partygoers.
I painted this in watercolour and ink pen because it felt just right and simplistic to create a simpler illustration instead of a detailed painting in the same way as my others. It actually turned out better than originally expected.
Looking forward to next week!
Alex
