It was a week later, sometime in the middle of the night, and Harrison was just finishing putting together the prototype replacements for Hartley’s cochlear implants. As of right now, they were just a pair of wireless around-the-ear earphones that came with a small remote. He couldn’t make actual cochlear implants as he didn’t have the proper sizing for Hartley’s ears, so this would have to do for now.
It had taken considerably less effort than he’d expected to both create the prototypes and keep them hidden from Team S.T.A.R. Cisco wasn’t the most observant of individuals and while Caitlin was particularly shrewd, she had no reason to be in the mechanics lab. Harrison himself wasn’t so ridiculous as to allow himself to be obviously distracted by thoughts of this project, and he worked on it primarily at night, so it went by completely unnoticed. If anybody noticed the dark shadows forming around his eyes from the lack of sleep, they didn’t comment on it. It wasn’t rare for Harrison--or any of the team, really--to periodically look like insomniacs. They all had nightmares from time to time...
With a glance at the clock, he expected Hartley to be setting off the alarms any minute now and prepared himself. He’d been telling himself all week that it wasn’t going to be difficult and he wasn’t going to make it difficult. They’d discuss the technology, Hartley would leave his battery cell and Harrison would finish the implants, and they’d never see each other again. He estimated that after tonight, they’d have one more visit and then it would be over....It wasn’t as comforting as he wanted it to be.
