Im a therapist. My 15-year-old client texted me this earlier. (Thankfully she just meant that she dyed her hair red, but I was definitely worried there for a minute)

On a scale of “great!” to “making a mandated report”, how’s your day going?
Important message from the kiddos I work with: “I AM THE BOSS OF MY BODY” And that means you are the boss of yours, too! Don’t let anyone (including society) tell you how to look, feel, or act. Your boundaries are respectable and people around you need to respect them. Especially with the holidays fast approaching, remember: you owe no one any sort of touch, nor do you owe anyone an explanation for how your body looks.
(And yes, I did have a child say that when they grow up, they want to be a grown up 😂😂)
While I recognize that some people benefit greatly from online therapy services, online sessions are not ideal for many people who are used to going into the office. Virtual sessions are hard, especially with kids. I get a lot of up-the-nose shots and see quite a few ceilings. I don’t find the same type of connection as I do in the office, though I know rapport can most definitely be built virtually (I’m working on that). I miss playing board games (hell, I even miss playing uno) and playing in the sand with my younger kids. I miss worksheets and interactive activities and crafts.
I am so grateful, though, for the technology to be able to connect with kids around the city who need my help. I am grateful for parents who surrender their phones for 30-45 minutes to have the kids meet with me. I am grateful for caregivers who continue to engage with me and help their children engage with me. I am grateful for this learning experience and all the resources I have found (and created!) through it. I am grateful for my team, who constantly push me and encourage me to be my best clinical self.
why is my brain like this
i’ll be scrolling, minding my business, absolutely not working, and then someone goes “hey i’m struggling mentally” and suddenly my soul clock-ins like a shift manager
girl you do not work here
but there i am
typing paragraphs
linking coping skills
explaining nervous system responses
doing mini psychoeducation at 1:12am like i’m being paid in coupons
no one asked for a consult
i did not invoice
i did not even hydrate first
and the thing is i’m not even mad about it because i genuinely like helping?? my brain just sees distress and goes “ah yes, side quest unlocked”
me: i should rest
also me: what if i emotionally stabilize a stranger instead
anyway if you’ve ever gotten suspiciously coherent mental health advice from a random gremlin on the internet
sorry
that was probably me
Who says therapists have to be serious?
Texting other therapists is so funny, just an endless thread of ~delivered quietly~
idk what it is about my therapist but I've been telling him stuff that has been under lock and keys for years and after the sessions I have to look at myself and go "what kind of sorcery was that?" it's so odd to me but also relieving??? but mostly puzzling
