Do you have any mental health advice for someone who is struggling but therapy isn’t an option at the moment? What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned in therapy/with mental health?
Hi -- I'm sorry you're struggling. Whatever the reasons, your struggles and the things you're feeling are valid.
When therapy isn't an option, I recommend looking for the people who are helping. Find positive resources here on Tumblr or Instagram. Your local library might also have programs that are available free of charge. Lean into crisis hotlines and online support groups. Look for therapists who offer sliding scale pay options or nearby universities that might offer similar services.
The biggest lesson I've learned is that healing is messy. It's not linear. It does not happen on a timeline or a schedule, and it certainly doesn't happen because someone else tells you it needs to.
My other favorite is that your thoughts aren't facts. They are opinions and can be treated as such.
I seem to have gotten myself into a completely unsustainable situation. I decided to go back to school, but my partner and I have made some poor financial decisions in the past that means that now I am studying we are barely staying afloat. This is causing so much anxiety and I feel like I have made a horrible mistake because the stress of trying to work and go to school while knowing I can’t afford my bills some months is overwhelming me to the point I can hardly function. I feel trapped, and I don’t know what to do. I feel like I cannot work and go to school without burning myself out,. I know I cannot afford to quit working for financial reasons but feel incredibly guilty dropping out of school when I already have taken out several thousand in loans to pay for it. I was trying to get help but my therapist dropped me as a client becuase I could no longer afford the asking rate, which was already far below the standard rate. I know I can’t keep up like this, I know I need help, but I feel so lost. Everything is overwhelming and the one thing that was helping (therapy) is now unavailable to me. I don’t even know where to start trying to help myself without making the whole situation worse. Do you have any advice or resources that might be able to help get me back on the right track?

This sounds like a really difficult situation to be in. It sounds like you have quite a lot going on for you right now and I am so sorry that all of this is taking its toll on you, this is quite a lot to deal with and especially all at once.
Whilst your schooling is so important and you have already taken out so many loans, is there a possibility where you can put your schooling on hold until you are more on your feet financially. I know that this isn’t a great situation and it may not be what you want to hear, but if you take a short break from school then you may be able to work a bit more, afford day to day living things including bills and maybe even save a bit of money along the way. And then when you are a bit better off financially then you can return to school when you are able to do so? Just an idea!
In terms of therapy, I am so sorry that you can no longer afford to keep seeing your therapist. Just because you were dropped as a client for financial reasons though does not mean you cannot access therapy in other ways! For example do you have any local community health centres in your area? Sometimes they have therapist’s there that will bulk bill. So this is something that you can definitely look into and further investigate. If this fails (and I know it’s not the same) but please know that you can always contact a counsellor from either a helpline or on web counselling. You do not have to go through this alone!
