Except it violated total transparency when Alec and Magnus were discussing that very topic and Alec said nothing to someone who is not only one of the people it would affect but one of the leaders that he promised to be totally transparent with. I totally get that Alec thought he was doing what he thought was best but you can't promise total transparency and then stay quiet about a lethal weapon that could wipe out an entire race of people. That's urgent!
okay so here’s the deal 1) just because magnus chose to bring the transparency up during a private person dinner between the two of them, doesn’t mean that alec had to tell him right there and then. he promised that he would give them updates during their weekly cabinet meetings (with everyone present! i don’t even wanna know what had happened if alec had favoured magnus over everyone else but that’s another discussion) not during dinner or fucking pillow talk in a private setting 2) the soul sword is DEACTIVATED!!! this is common knowledge, and alec even mentioned it during the episode. yes, the sword is still a mortal instrument which combined with the two others can be lethal, but the sword by itself can do nothing, it can’t harm anyone. it’s not fucking urgent!!!! yes, i do think that they should know about it, because it could affect the entire downworld in the long run, but there’s literally no reason that it couldn’t have waited until the next meeting
