In 1959, an eruption at the Kilauea Iki crater just a short distance from the main caldera filled the crater with a lava lake. That lava lake slowly cooled and crusted over. As it cooled, everything shrank, so that lid that formed first suddenly was under compression as the lake squeezed downwards into the crater. These ridges formed as the lid was compressed and fractured upwards.
