Strange Laws Found on the Internet

The amount of strange and just plain stupid laws for almost every country that can be found on the internet boggles the mind. It boggled my mind when I spent a very long time trawling the internet trying to find the best ones. The things I do for you, dear reader. So many of them start with “a friend of a friend told me that…” but I have taken the most trust worthy and verify-able of the thousands that are out there and delivered them to you.

In the England it is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament.

On a study of 4,000 people done recently by UKTV this strange law was voted the strangest. I think the stranger thing is that only 27% of people surveyed found it the strangest on the list. Nigel Cawthorne (author of the book Strange Laws of Old England) told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that anyone who dies in Parliament is technically entitled to a state funeral and the law is in place to ensure this doesn’t happen. The list the surveyed people read did include such English gems as: a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants and it is illegal not to tell the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing. I love England.

In Washington, America it is mandatory for a motorist with criminal intentions to stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he is entering the town.

Oh America. God bless your faces. In an effort to reduce crime in the area Washington law enforcers introduced this law. It was never followed because it is obviously both a strange and stupid law so it had little effect on reducing anything, except maybe my opinion of America as a whole.

In Western Australia it is illegal to crush beer cans between your breasts in a pub.

First of all, ouch. Second of all, why? Well a 31 year old barmaid, who worked at the Premier Hotel in Pinjarra, south of Perth, decided to entertain her customers by taking their empty beer cans and crushing them… but her hands were just too busy so she had to use her breasts instead. She ended up in court and was fined $1000 for her troubles.

In Australia, lawmakers are proposing a new law that will not allow anyone to come closer than 100 meters from a dead whale’s carcass.

This is kind of breaking news because it hasn’t actually been enacted yet. It became apparent that we in Australia needed a law such as this because footage was shot of tourists going out into a feeding frenzy of sharks who were feeding on a dead whale. This may not sound all that bad because the tourists were safe inside a boat, except that they weren’t, they were attempting to pat the sharks. In Australia we try to protect people who are too stupid to protect themselves. I think we deserve a pat on the back for that.

Finding out all these strange laws has either made me want to become a lawyer or a criminal, I‘m not quite sure which yet... Either way props to the internet and all its infinite (and somemetimes unverifiable but accepted as true nonetheless) hilarity.
