When she walked into the café, she realized that it was incredibly busy. She had never seen so many people here before and wondered if she would be able to read comfortably. It must be the snow that brought them all inside. There were countless couples, mothers with children sipping hot chocolate, and a few businessmen huddled in the corner possibly discussing job strategies over Americanos.
There was only one seat open near the window. She usually avoided windows because the movement outside distracted her. She set her things down to claim her seat and then went to the counter to order. She didn’t feel like having coffee today, so instead she ordered a green tea. It took only two seconds to prepare and she was sitting in her spot, book in hand before she could even put the change in her wallet.
“Mind if I sit with you?”
She looked up right into the face of the man who always seemed angry. He still had snowflakes in his hair. She moved her cup over to make room for him without saying a word. She was scared that too much interaction with him would make him angry and yell at her. He sighed as he sat down and dropped his bag on the ground, the sound revealing the weight of the things inside.
“It’s so busy here. This is the only other chair not taken. Thank you,” he said.
She didn’t need his explanation. She could see how busy it was and had felt the same fear of not finding a spot. He gave her a quick smile and for that moment he was incredibly hansom.
“No problem,” she whispered behind her book.
