Funny you should ask! Probably the alpha-male/conan the barbarian type lead in romance fiction. I finished what would’ve otherwise been a good book yesterday that was tainted by how much I hated the lead dude. Protective is fine, I love me some swoony concern or bridal carries...but when the lead guy completely disregards everything the female lead says and treats her like an object who can’t think for herself, I find it super squicky.

More awful, I expected it, still didn't fully notice it because it's such a foregone conclusion that will happen. African gets drums; Asian gets the designated string-plucking; there's a certain mournful twang that comes with the Irish...These "cues" are a lazy in the 21st cent.

(And Latinos get maracas and Spanish guitar.) 

It’s so subliminal and ingrained that people usually don’t even realize they’re doing it or listening to it. So like, I get it, but, like you said, it’s lazy and that default needs to be called out and there need to be higher standards at this point.

I love Wolfgang. I love him. I love him with Kala. I love that the pull between them is epic and strong and seemingly destined for tragic separation. Seriously by the time their kiss actually happened I was ready to sell every Sensate up the river just to have them kiss. When he told Felix he was going to India with his half of the money I about died. Died, I tell you, died! Kala being the adorable Ganesha-worshiping angel that she is, taking peeks at Wolfie and lusting/loving him. Ah!!!!

See my thing is, I think it’s very hard to establish connections between characters in such a limited amount of time while still making it believable to the audience, and those 2 have it in spades. You know how sometimes you can tell when 2 actors are enjoying their scenes together? That’s what I see with Max and Tina. You can just tell they genuinely like each other, and it comes across on screen. They have great chemistry together and I can’t wait to see more of it in season 2 :)

Sense8: love it. It didn't click until they began inhabiting each other's lives. Will wasn't a problem for me. I was more concerned/wary of the 'fighting Asian' & 'happy African' trope. But the show made both work w/o devolving either character. Riley's wounded pixie suffered because her full story was revealed late. I need more Lito-cluster meetings; Sun & Wolfgang need to have a convo. Currently shipping Wolf & Kala as well as Will & Riley. Everyone's a puppy to be protected basically.

I think Sun worked because it wasn’t that she was Asian and because of that she was a martial arts prodigy. She worked hard at martial arts because that’s how she channeled her anger against her father and brother. She and Wolfgang definitely need to have a conversation because I think they have a lot in common in terms of how they bottle up emotions.

Riley definitely suffered from having her story revealed so near to the end. She clicked for me when her backstory was revealed, but it was a little late for me to get as attached to her as I did the others.

Amanita is probably one of my favorite characters in this just because she is so fierce in protecting Nomi which I think is an intrinsic part of what makes their relationship work. Nomi is a person who has been scarred literally and figuratively by how people, including her own family, have wronged her and I think the fact that Amanita is so protective of her definitely drew Nomi to her. Also, those two Nancy Drew-ing into the Doctor’s house gave me life. They’re my ultimate OTP here. 

Lito and Hernando are so sweet and even though I think Lito really needs to grow up a little and stop being so codependent on Hernando, I just love them together so much. You can just see how in love and full of life they are when they’re together. It broke my heart when Lito was at the museum talking to Nomi about their first date.

I can tell you right now that Wolfgang/Kala is gonna cause me many many tears. Lord, when he appeared at her wedding completely naked I was like, yes, yes this is my ship. I think their stories play an interesting contrast with one another with regards to their family. Kala is always surrounded by family and friends and their love. A large part of her keeping her engagement is because she doesn’t want to disappoint them. Wolf’s story plays almost completely opposite to hers, where he slowly ends up isolating himself by killing all his remaining family members, his father, his cousin, his uncle. He’s been surrounded by violence his whole life, from his father who I think it was implied raped him, to his uncle who knew and ignored it. By the end he’s so alone, with his only friend in a coma. Yeah, these two are really gonna hurt me in the long run.

It's Memorial Day weekend that's why there are so many flags everywhere. Some houses carry flags in general, but this weekend's a national holiday. Also, I appreciate your top 5. I'm from New Jersey and people are always shocked when I mention the pretty chunks of nature in the tri-state area (New Jersey, New York & Connecticut). The fact that wood houses are unusual for you makes me want to visit Amsterdam. Anywho, I hope you continue to enjoy your trip. :)

ah yes i know it is, i don’t mean just this weekend but weeks before too, there are still so many houses that carry them in general! or even just little patriotic (?) decorations on mail boxes! it’s just very weird to me as in the netherlands you don’t see the dutch flag that much at all, and it’s even rarer to be found on common living houses, unless it’s a holiday, celebration or time of mourning. anyways, i love how green and beautiful everything here looks and i really hope to be visiting new jersey and connecticut and hopefully be able to camp there too! also, thank you very much im sure i will :–)
