Two months after I ordered it, Tears For Fears’ The Seeds of Love picture disc finally turned up in the mail. Gorgeous—and the record is pretty, too!

After some extensive hemming and hawing, I ordered the new five-disc box set documenting Tears For Fears’ 1989 magnum opus, The Seeds of Love. I’ve written about it a few times before here and in a nutshell, it’s a difficult album that I have always wanted to like more than I actually do. Some of it is jaw-droppingly brilliant and some of it loses the plot badly, evaporating in a cloud of its own self-importance. I’ve always tried to figure out how they got to that point, so I hope that the box set finally spells it out for me.

This one is pretty cool—a special 2-LP version of Tears For Fears’ 1989 pop opus, The Seeds of Love. The sprawling, ambitious album is still contained on a single LP, but the second LP is filled with loose, liminal jam sessions recorded while they were still writing the songs early in the two-plus years it took to make the record. I’ve always wrestled with this album because it wants to be so organic, atmospheric and above all virtuosic; it achieves some of those qualities sometimes, but it is also rather studied and a bit scatterbrained as well. The jams, however, show that the epic vibes in many of the songs were baked in from the start, which is interesting to discover. The core creative elements were always there, and you can connect the dots to see how they developed into the final songs. Of note, one of the best parts of the album has always been its incredible cover photo, and while you should never mess with perfection, I really dig the modified cover; the blue framing is lovely. This edition is from the UK where it is currently being sold as an HMV exclusive. Some reports say 1,000 copies were made, others say 750, and there’s some confusion as to whether it’s a limited edition or merely available for a limited time; I lean towards the later otherwise it would’ve been impossible for me to get my hands on it here overseas.
