I would like to getmy bf some wood carving gifts to make spoond and things. He has some tools already but is there anything else he could use?
Also...where can i buy wood for him to work on...other than getting it from a tree? What wood is good for carving?
Hey there!! What a great gift idea, carving is such a rewarding hobby!
I use a Morakniv Hook Knife and an Ahti Tikka knife myself, as well as a Robin Wood Carving Axe, which I really highly recommend! A nice sharpening kit is always extremely useful as well.
As for wood, I personally love to work with black cherry, silver maple, black walnut, apple, and white birch- most fine-grained hardwoods will do! But unfortunately I’ve never bought the wood, only found it- outside of cutting a tree down in the forest, there will sometimes be people locally on craigslist or facebook marketplace attempting to sell wood that they’ve cut down in their yard and such- that can be a good place to start! I’ll admit that I’ve definitely seen nice-looking felled trees in yards and on roadsides while driving and pulled over to ask for some pieces!
I hope that helps, best of luck!!
