It was bitter cold of winter. A time Tom normally refused to leave his home and hearth. But whispers of shadow filled the air. This he knew. So he bid his wife farewell for a time, to visit an old wise friend to consult. To see if he too, felt the changes. Felt the pain and agony of death literally ripping forth back to life.

Bundled in furs, with his straw hat planted firmly on his head, he forged forward, keen eyes seeking his friend. With the hiss of ancient tongue, the winds seemed to instantly die down, as if avoiding the man completely. He needed answers. He needed help.

He sat for hours with that box and that hair clip. He debated every possible outcome, and every possible conversation it would spawn. He considered the range of reactions, and he came to one conclusion: he really needed to stop putting himself in the middle of these things.

But he also came to another conclusion that had the smallest chance of ruining his marriage.

Nowë was out at the docks, as expected, so Ossë sat himself atop the fabled Chest of Secrets, his own much smaller chest-with-a-secret in his lap.
