College Tuition Bubble

Now I'm no fan of Bernie Sanders, but I think that writing him off as a socialist and not giving some thought to the context doesn't make sense. Free tuition at public universities sounds crazy, right? In Michigan, the average college student with student loan debt last year bore a debt of about $30,000. A quick check of just the history department professors salaries at the University of Michigan indicates salaries ranging between $95k and $205k - with most in the middle of the range. Professors in technical programs such as engineering and the sciences make substantially more. The Deans make between $200k and $630k / year. The President of UofM makes $772k. The football coach makes . . . $7 million. The University of Michigan will also contribute 10% of a professor's income toward a retirement plan up to $265k - meaning that a professor making $205k in income will - without making a single contribution of his own - receive $20,500 from the University of Michigan each year toward his or her retirement. That same professor can contribute another 5% or so - increasing that dollar contribution per year by another 50%. The University also pays for most of the health insurance premium for employees and even toward the plans of retirees. It seems to me that you could be an employee of UofM with a pretty good lifestyle and end up with a pretty massive retirement plan without ever contributing anything toward the plan, and make a very good income along the way. Most state universities in Michigan treat employees in much the same manner. So students are going into massive debt, entering a poor work force with poor job prospects while University employees are living exceedingly comfortable lives and getting fat retirement funding - at student and taxpayer expense. Not hard to figure out how Sanders proposal is appealing. What is hard to figure out is why conservatives brush that off and write him off as a socialist and don't recognize that we're all talking about the same problem - just trying to solve it in different ways.
