Is anyone else offended by Hillary Clinton's suggestion last night that, simply because she's a woman running for President, her credentials as a progressive are unassailable? Is Carly Fiorina a progressive because she's running for President too. Look, you can't take $700k from Goldman Sachs, have a daughter who makes $3m per year "overseeing" a foundation funded not by the family - but by massive corporate interests, and a son-in-law who runs a $200m hedge fund funded by your political connections - and claim you're a "progressive." She's fraud - like most of the rest. She speaks for larger interests and tips a hand to the progressives to pander to those young, empty-headed idealists just to get their vote. Bernie is wrong, but at least he's sincere. He should fight her harder on that point. And since when was it a badge of honor in the political world in the modern United States to be a progressive anyway? Progressive politics gave us Woodrow Wilson - and the Second World War - oh, yeah, and government-mandated and sponsored eugenics.

College Tuition Bubble

Now I'm no fan of Bernie Sanders, but I think that writing him off as a socialist and not giving some thought to the context doesn't make sense. Free tuition at public universities sounds crazy, right? In Michigan, the average college student with student loan debt last year bore a debt of about $30,000. A quick check of just the history department professors salaries at the University of Michigan indicates salaries ranging between $95k and $205k - with most in the middle of the range. Professors in technical programs such as engineering and the sciences make substantially more. The Deans make between $200k and $630k / year. The President of UofM makes $772k. The football coach makes . . . $7 million. The University of Michigan will also contribute 10% of a professor's income toward a retirement plan up to $265k - meaning that a professor making $205k in income will - without making a single contribution of his own - receive $20,500 from the University of Michigan each year toward his or her retirement. That same professor can contribute another 5% or so - increasing that dollar contribution per year by another 50%. The University also pays for most of the health insurance premium for employees and even toward the plans of retirees. It seems to me that you could be an employee of UofM with a pretty good lifestyle and end up with a pretty massive retirement plan without ever contributing anything toward the plan, and make a very good income along the way. Most state universities in Michigan treat employees in much the same manner. So students are going into massive debt, entering a poor work force with poor job prospects while University employees are living exceedingly comfortable lives and getting fat retirement funding - at student and taxpayer expense. Not hard to figure out how Sanders proposal is appealing. What is hard to figure out is why conservatives brush that off and write him off as a socialist and don't recognize that we're all talking about the same problem - just trying to solve it in different ways.
