A recent discovery of mine, I never cease to be amazed by Justin Vernon’s (Bon Iver) plethora of side projects and the way that each one feels strangely different and pleasantly similar. This soulful and flowing track brings the beauty and range of Vernon's voice into the realm of Jimi Hendrix's realm of complex guitar and rawness. The ebb and flow of “I Had a Real Good Lover” pulls you along slowly and almost painfully until you realize time as flashed through the course of this nearly 7 minute track. Though I am quite late to The Shouting Matches, now I can feel satisfied that this song will be on a constant rotation for a long time to come. If this is a new find for you, I implore you to dig deeper into the Shouting Matches songs and if this is something you’ve experienced previously, I know that Justin Vernon will suck you back in with those pipes and inflections that never cease to bring a tear to the eye. This garage like almost unprocessed feel is something I feel more recent Bon Iver has steered away from and its thrilling to experience it again.
