Hey Reyna I had a question - so I'm looking into getting a tablet to start doing digital art, but I don't know which tablet is best to get if I'm just starting out and low on money to get a tablet. Would it be better to get something like a wacom or would it be a smarter option for now to get an android tablet and download a drawing app?

hi Sierra! I’m not really the best person to ask because I’ve only ever used one tablet, but i can tell you what i did, and hopefully you can use it to help your decision.

I bought my tablet maybe five years ago (a medium wacom intuos4), it was about $80, i think. i also bought a version of Photoshop Elements. this method was nice because it allowed me to dive right into learning without going the whole nine yards on something i wasn’t sure about... it’s taken me almost five years to grow out of PSE (there’s a lot now that i want to be able to do but have to work around because it doesn’t have all the assets of Photoshop) and i’m still using my first tablet, so i’d say it was a pretty good investment.

i think it depends on your certainty about whether or not you’ll continue working digitally for a good time to come. if you think you might try it and then decide it’s not your thing, don’t go all out to buy high-quality stuff you won’t end up using.

an android tablet may be a good place for a beginner (this coming from someone who has never used one for art so take it with a grain of salt), but if you believe this is something you will commit to long term, I think the better choice would be to get something that can support your learning process for a little longer. you might grow out of what an android tablet can offer too quickly for it to be a good investment, and start wanting something more.

in the end, it’s your decision. i would recommend getting a medium-quality tablet, something that will last you if you decide to pursue it but isn’t too complicated/expensive for beginner/non-professional. but it all depends on how far you think you’ll go with it.

there’s my (long!) two cents. i hope it could be somewhat helpful, and i look forward to seeing what you end up doing :) digital art is a big learning curve but it’s fun!
