Happy bilated birthday to Budgie! Drummer for Siouxie and the Banshees, The Slits, and The Creatures.
Photos of Paloma McLardy (aka Palmolive), onetime Slits and Raincoats drummer, taken by me in Dennisport, MA one Saturday afternoon in June 1995.
So, the photos above are skipping ahead in time a bit from where we last left off, so I’ll quickly get us up to speed.
Jeremy and I had driven down to Cape Cod to see Palmolive perform with her band, Hi-Fi, one Saturday as part of their weekly church social. She was friendly... very friendly. In fact, she and other members of her church clearly wanted to convert us, which was a bit awkward. But getting to see Palmolive behind the drums—wow! And when they played a Jesus-themed rendition of Slits classic “FM”—double wow!
I knew another fan of female post-punk who would be very interested in learning about Palmolive’s second musical career. I called my friend Mike, who published the zine Caught In Flux. And he almost immediately wanted Palmolive’s contact info so he could set up an interview. I believe I connected him with Jeremy, who helped arrange for the three of us to head to Cape Cod some Saturday in June. This time I’d come prepared with my tape recorder and my camera.
In fact, I used by nascent web development skills back then to create a Palmolive web site containing the interview Mike conducted, my photos and other information. That vintage 1995 site remains up today in more or less the same form.
Paloma was so warm and welcoming, guiding us through pages from her scrapbook, some of which documented her relationship with Clash guitarist Joe Strummer. She also showed an impish sense of humor, posing in the top photo as her younger self captured in a photo by Annette Weatherman that is featured prominently on Paloma’s own web site.
Tomorrow: Interview and photos complete, we head over to The Coffee House to see Palmolive perform with her band.
