I believe that there is a deeper reality, under everyday 'normal' existence there lies a magical world of things which are hidden from the conscious mind, why am I telling you this? Well, it's because this little gnome used my fingers to draw itself this morning at 5.30am when I was compelled to my graphics tablet from bed. ( I don't usually get up until about 7.30am) His eyes look so sad and it is because of the coronavirus, I felt this intuitively. So just to clarify, I am a sceptic about all things magickal, I don't believe any old shit, but I do believe in synchronicity and that the things which manifest in the now have significance. I don't know what the significance of this is but I felt comforted by the wisdom and empathy in his eyes. It reminds me of an old sepia photo so I thought it might be something from the past, but I'm feeling that it is a reminder of the myriad forms and beings just below the threshold of our consciousness which exist in the now. Getting inspired by the subconscious

It is difficult to understand how my subconscious works let alone how anybody else’s subconscious can lead their actions. By looking into how generally the subconscious mind tends to work could potentially help me to understand how it can be visualised and from there create drawings of the subconscious in different situations.

Of course I realise that these drawings will be subconsciously steered by my preconceptions and prejudices but this will have to become part of my exploration unless I involve other people in my work and ask them to draw their subconscious using a notation that I am working to ‘invent’.

“Automatism is the same as free association, the method used by the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud to explore the unconscious mind of his patients. Freud’s ideas strongly influenced French poet André Breton who launched the surrealist movement in 1924 with the publication of the Manifesto of Surrealism. In the manifesto, Breton actually defined surrealism as ‘Pure psychic automatism the dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason and outside all moral or aesthetic concerns’. The earliest examples of automatism are the automatic writings of Breton and others, produced by simply writing down as rapidly as possible whatever springs to mind. Surrealist collage, invented by Max Ernst, was the first form of visual automatism, in which he put together images clipped from magazines, product catalogues, book illustrations, advertisements and other sources to create a strange new reality. In painting, various forms of automatism were then developed by artists such as Joan Miro, Andre Masson as well as Ernst. Later it led to the abstract expressionism of Jackson Pollock and others and was an important element in the European movements of art informel and arte nucleare.”
