I’ve always struggled with what is vs what could/should be. And I understand that most things don’t change rapidly or overnight on a larger scale, especially change that will be sustainable. However, I do feel if we just say “this just is what it is” and don’t make any move to change the ways in which we do things, then we’re upholding the very “monster” that hurts us. “Feeding the monster” I like to say. Stay with me, I’m going somewhere

A huge conversation has been happening in recent years around women wanting to have children/not wanting to have children, the division of labor within the home, women bearing the mental load alone, etc. etc. . One point keeps getting repeated that I loathe, and I couldn’t figure out why, but I’ve gotten to the bottom of it. “If you have a child as a woman, no matter what, that child is your responsibility and you need to always be prepared to be a single mother.” “Mama’s baby, Papa’s maybe”. Y’all know what I’m talking about. It’s something that’s been being told to me for as long as I can remember from the women in my family/community. Married, divorced, or single, they all say this. Do I disagree with the sentiment? No I don’t. It’s real, and it reflects the reality of what all of these women have had to go through. But it doesn’t sit right with me! Why? Because we’re still putting the onus on women!!! “He could be the perfect man/father and still leave, die, become disabled, blah blah blah”…so could you! Mothers could pick up and leave, die, become terminally ill, become disabled as well. Do we ever say to men, “hey man, before you start wanting that baby, you need to always be prepared to be a single father”? No we don’t. But we should! The way all of these aspects of family life and the sacrifices (not just money) and the loneliness get drilled into the girls, daughters, nieces, younger cousins, and granddaughters, they need to be drilled into the boys, sons, nephews, grandsons as well. I can’t guarantee that I’ll make a difference, but I think it’s worth a shot.

I’m glad that we’re getting all of these candid conversations and put up on game by our foremothers, elders, and peers. I appreciate them arming us with knowledge they wished someone told them. I just can’t help but feeling like there’s still some inequalities in the way we speak about these things that nobody wants to look at.
