The purpose for the trip to Theta was to meet the long time residents of Theta and hear their stories at the historic Theta Methodist Church, est. 1907 but roots to Mt Zion church established much sooner. Gravel Hill Road used to be the main thoroughfare through town. They hosted 3 stores, 3 churches, 2 barbers, a post office and a bank. The state paid a stipend to one family to pay for horseshoes and a ferrier so the children would have transportation to school. They all agreed girls from Theta are the prettiest. I couldn’t argue with that. “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.” ~ A.
