The Fairy and the Tech

Nathan hated being sent on field missions, especially by himself. He had practically begged the Council to send somebody, anybody else out, but they were as stubborn as ever. So here he was, out in some unfamiliar, primitive universe in which they probably hadn’t even invented cold fusion yet.
The little device in his hand beeped quietly as he followed the signal, searching for the source of the multiversal anachronism. Was it an item? A person? He didn’t know. He hoped it wasn’t a person. They tended to be much harder to work with than machines. He looked up from his scanner and realized with a start that he was about to walk right into someone, forcing himself to stop and tripping over himself in the process. As he gathered himself back up he examined the person he had nearly collided with. She looked like some kind of Fae creature, which wings and pointed ears and all that, but her wings were in tatters. Definitely not the usual.
“Oh, uh, sorry about that,” Nathan stammered. “I didn’t see you there.”
