Release Date: May 3, 2014
Genre: Alternative Hip-Hop
Dwelling in the deepest parts of Houston's underground scene, Melrose, a 19 year old Rapper/Producer, released one of the most beautifully crafted and impressive albums of 2014. Fusing the atmospheric and ethereal production styles of artists such as Robb Bank$ with his diverse sample choices and extremely clever world play, this release could easily be mistaken for an album put out by a more prolific and experienced artist. Containing zero features of any kind this album is 100% Melrose and has landed on number 2 on our top 10 albums of the year list.
The album opens up with "Wishes" a fantastic, evolving track which introduces many of the albums recurring themes both production wise and lyrically. Melrose's lyrics contain many allusions to his own personal issues, feelings of isolation and are filled to the brim with Dragon Ball Z references. The lyrics and themes of each song could also create a psuedo thematic concept album that revolves around the life of the albums namesake, Kazuya Mishima. The production on the other hand in consistently hazy and samples a myriad of different sources, from Drake and M83 to Spaceghost Purp and of course, Dragon Ball Z. While being a technically skilled rapper and producer, Merlose does not stray away from being easy to swallow. The Tracks "Know You" and "Zarbon" are extremely catchy and very similar to tracks off of Drake's latest release Nothing Was The Same.
Since the release of Kazuya Melrose has produced a myriad of tracks and has provided guest verses on multiple albums. Despite more recently focusing on his two Progressive Metal bands, Melrose does have a follow up to Kazuya in the works and a collaborative album with fellow Houston rapper Orlando Kennedy. Melrose has left his mark in the Houston Hip-Hop scene as one of, if not the best, in the scene his follow ups will decide how long he reigns supreme.
Best Tracks: Wishes, Know You, and Kazuya
