RULES: Don’t take more than a few minutes. Don’t think too hard. They don’t have to be great works of the gaming industry, just games that have affected you in a positive way. Then tag some friends including me so I can see your list.
Yeah yeah okay.
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Will forever and always be my favorite game of the Zelda series, no arguments. I got incredibly immersed in the world with this game and there was something morbidly intensely fascinating by seeing how the people live in the final days of the world. Ikana Canyon remains one of the most hauntingly beautiful and captivating regions of any game to me and I always love diving into what little lore we have of it.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - One of the only horror games I can actually play without quitting like a baby. The story is incredibly Lovecraftian in nature and the environments are as stunningly beautiful as they are haunting. Everything about the game is just incredibly made and I find myself coming back to the game again and again.
Mirror's Edge - I have so much love for this game. Traversing every level is like a very action-focused puzzled but as you get better at the game you start feeling just like the runners described within: "We see the flow. Rooftops become pathways and conduits, possibilities and routes of escape. The flow is what keeps us running, keeps us alive." It's honestly an experience I've never gotten from any other game and it's another title I constantly find myself returning to.
Psychonauts - Boy what do I even say about this one. It's a rough little gem. The game is buggy, the UI is kinda horrendous, and everything about it just feels dated as hell. But despite all that it's so damn good. It's a quirky as hell game with some stunningly beautiful environments. The writing and themes are silly as hell but at the same time there's a layer of deeper meaning and occasionally quite the sense of creeping disturbance. I recommend this gem really highly even with all the flaws.
Sonic Generations - This game was made as a love letter to the Sonic the Hedgehog series and boy is it a damn good one. The 3D levels are finally amazingly fun to play and work well and the 2D levels bring a fun blast of nostalgia and classic Sonic gameplay. Everything about the game from all aspects is lovingly crafted and just a total blast to experience.
Dark Cloud - This is another weird entry. The game itself is something of a nightmare in production values. There's spelling errors and inconsistencies everywhere, the battle system is pretty barebones, the dungeon diving is pretty repetitive at parts, the town building is nowhere near as complex and involved as it could be... and yet I just love this game to pieces. There's just something incredibly captivating about the game despite all the flaws. The weapon system is probably the biggest strength, the amount of hours I've spent working on weapons is absolutely absurd. It's really rough around the edges and quirky but damn is it still good despite all that... or maybe because of all that.
Final Fantasy IX - This is the game that got me both into the Final Fantasy series and the RPG genre as a whole. I saw it played by a cousin and even just from watching a bunch of stuff I didn't really grasp the meaning of I was captivated. When I finally got to play the game myself I got lost in everything. I love every part of this game and it will forever be my favorite of the series. The characters, the story, the music, the visuals... I could gush for hours about this game and still not be done singing its praises.
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - My introduction to the entire SMT series. In a state of extreme stupidity I was convinced by my boyfriend (who I still haven't forgiven) to play this game completely blind on Hard mode. There was a lot of pain, misery, and quite a lot of tears in finally getting myself through this game but the ride was worth it. I have never felt so accomplished in my life as I did when I finally watched the end credits roll. From then on, SMT has been one of my favorite game series for the absolutely enthralling atmosphere and stories. This game is an experience I'll never forget.
Phantasy Star Online - This game is my childhood. I have such an incredible amount of love for everything about this game. The environments are stunning. The story, while buried within journal logs and background info, is enthralling and heart wrenching. The music is top notch and beautiful. The gameplay is challenging and wonderful. I spent a huge amount of time on this game and will always have amazing memories of it. There's also nothing that will top the excitement of seeing that certain shade of red related to a rare drop either.
Ragnarok Online - One of the oldest and longest running MMO's. It's honestly got quite a lot of flaws, especially when compared to the more modern design of MMOs. It's grindy as hell, there's virtually no story to be found if you don't dig really deep into quests and NPCs and exploration. The gameplay is pretty flat and non-involved. But damn it was a huge part of my childhood and a lot of my growing up in general. I've spent hundred, possibly thousands, of hours on the game. The lore, environment, and world flavor is all unique and captivating. The absolute best part of the game though is the soundtrack. To this day, Ragnarok Online still has my absolute favorite soundtrack of any game to date. This game shaped me into the gamer I am today and I will always remember it with intense love.
