The heartbeats were so loud. So very, very loud. Amadeo could hear them in his sleep. Hear them all day long. As if they were calling to him. But he dare not go near them. Even Marius was wary of him approaching them. No, he took the Blood from Marius himself, and Marius took from Those Who Must Be Kept. But their heartbeats were so loud. And once, he had thought he’d heard a voice in his mind. A woman’s voice. And there it was again, calling to him in his sleep.
I can make you better, Amadeo. One drink from me and you will be completely yourself again, and so strong. Stronger than He could ever make you.
Amadeo sat bolt upright in the bed. he looked around frantically. Marius was gone. He could hear the heartbeats of the Mother and Father, and one other. Marius was not home, apparently. But Bianca was. He raced from his room. Bianca usually rose around the same time he did. It was in the air who would rise first. Tonight, it had been her, though not for long, it would seem.
She was dressed in a long gown that she normally slept in, and her hair was down around her shoulders. Long blonde tresses flowing over her shoulders as she sat before the vanity. He raced over to her. “Bianca!” he exclaimed, wrapping his arms around her and crawling into her lap, wearing his nightshirt alone. He buried his face against her chest. “They were talking to me again, while I slept. What do they want with me, Bianca? What does she want? I don’t want to go to her. Why won’t she leave me alone?” he asked meekly. “Why do I dream of her?”
It was a quiet night. Just upon waking up she realized Marius had left. She had this habit, almost a mania, to always control the house and the surroundings, listening to heartbeats, sensing the presences near. Marius and Amadeo’s heartbeats she knew by heart, as well as The Parent’s. Any other immortal heartbeat near would be cause for alarm. That night there wasn’t any foreign presence, but Marius was absent. It always made her a bit uncomfortable when he was away.
And thus, when Amadeo irrupted in the bedroom so suddenly it alarmed her immediately. She opened her arms for him at once at embraced him protectively “Who Amadeo? who was talking to you?” but even as she uttered the words she was already looking inside his mind for answers. What she found eased her worry. She sighed quietly, relieved, and petted Amadeo’s hair soothingly “The Parents? are they talking to you? It’s the Mother talking to you?”
There was no way to know, of course, if it was really The Parents of if it was Amadeo’s own mind. Even when Marius received visions from them, he was never entirely sure. Bianca herself had never heard a voice in her head that she could attribute to The Parents, so she couldn’t attest the voice in Amadeo’s dream. However, nothing of that really mattered.
“It’s alright, do not worry about it. Perhaps it was only a dream. You are awake now. Listen to my voice. You’re safe” she kissed his face and hugged him tightly. Not a single night passed that she didn’t felt grateful and immensely fortunate for having him there, with them and safe “Why does it scare you so, Amadeo? There is no threat in The Parents”
