Inspired by @bastionhead @kathrinanellis and their demos at the @thewoodworkingshows this year I put down (most of) the powertools and carved my first successful spoon. I’ve tried before with mixed but mostly poor results. Main reasons were dull tools and not paying attention to the grain direction. Managed to dig a path to the Powermatic and chucked up the closest piece of wood I can find. Gonna quick make a calabash bowl, or maybe a couple of them, for personal therapy. When in doubt always go back to the basics. When stressed out, make art. Pod. Originally turned under the direct supervision of Michael Hosaluk during a class I took this year. Finally sat down to play with coloring yesterday. 4 up, 4 down. 60 minutes total start to finish. Maple Calabash bowls turned to 1/8” thick. Rounded bottom and consistent wall thickness. Pushed my speed while focusing on proper technique. They are all around 8.5 inches diameter. Need to do stuff like this more often, lots of fun! All turned with traditional gouges (@carterandsontoolworks)with just a standard 50 degree bevel. Maple plywood laminate calabash bowl. Colored with Straw, Honey, Burnt Orange and Ruby Intrinsic Colors from Hampshire Sheen. (Yes, I’ll get more of the sampler sets in a soon as Martin is available to ship the other things I was waiting for!). 8.5 inches diameter and 2.5 inches tall. Gloss lacquer finish. Really enjoying playing with the ply blanks I got from @turningbytim . Teaser shot since they’re still not buffed yet. Collaboration with @alex.snodgrass. He roughed out and cored these back in 2017 and set them to the side to dry. Turned them over to me in February and I finish turned them yesterday and today. All I had to do was “not screw them up”. Stunning color in this Ambrosia Maple but at times it was like turning stone. I’ll get some good pics after they are finished. Turned, sanded to 220. Applied Mylands Wood Finishes Cellulose Sanding Sealer and Yorkshire Grit Original Abrasive Paste.
