Talk about thewanderingelf

[ Ever since I discovered Lord of the Rings in high school, I've been fascinated with the relationship Legolas has with his father. I only got to read bits and pieces of Thranduil in The Hobbit, and even then the elvenprince wasn't present in the story. It only got me thinking about what they were like as a family, seeing as the elvenqueen died before they could actually enjoy their time as a family. Then I came to Tumblr and lo, there are a lot of amazing Legolas roleplayers who bring this character to life beautifully.
Kat's Legolas is a muse who helps me figure out where these two really stand. There are times when their relationship as father and son can be considered sweet and loving, but most of the time their conversations (especially with adult!Legolas) center on defiance, rebellion, and debate. And that, I think, is the crux of their bond. They love each other fiercely, would die for the other if need be, but are not afraid to speak up when they think the other is going astray. Or is being irrational and reckless, which is often. They are similar, which is why it's very easy for them to fall into an argument.
I love how their Legolas is both sassy yet independent, who clearly has inherited his father's headstrong nature and (as I believe her to be) his mother's compassion. I can see that he is always trying to gain his father's approval, while on my end I can see that Thranduil believes that his son does not need his approval. He has always been proud of Legolas, but with that wall he has built around himself to protect him from feeling the emotions he refuses to acknowledge, he can't bring himself to tell his son that. And it is this complexity that makes me believe that, because of the relationship my muse has with thewanderingelf, Thranduil and Legolas have one of the strongest familial bonds. Which is, sadly, seemingly underestimated. ]
