It's hard to look away, impossible to pretend this isn't happening, but damned if he doesn't try. Telling himself that if he closes his eyes, this will all go away. He exhales slowly, concentrating on the desert dust swirling above his head, on anything that will distract him from the fact that there's corpses everywhere; soldiers, comrades, good men, and they're all gone. Gone except for the ones that are getting back up, pulling their bullet-ridden bodies upright with effort that's not human at all, but he really, really, tries not to think about that. (He doesn't think about the one lying next to him, either, or how round after round fired into its chest hadn't even slowed it down.) He finally gathers enough resolve to get up and crawl his way out of the ditch, rifle clutched close to his chest. The whole expanse of the desert stares back at him, more endless than ever. Gunshots start up again in the distance, snapping him back into focus and he breaks into a run towards the source. If there's a gun firing, there has to be someone alive the fire it, right?
