FYI, painting lovers: we're going to keep posting about this book because we love it too. ⁠ ⁠ 'The World We Make' is the first comprehensive monograph on acclaimed painter @asherald —whose distinctive style of simplified realist portraiture features African American subjects rendered against colorful monochrome backdrops or in everyday settings. Sherald rose to fame after being chosen by former first lady @michelleobama to paint her official portrait for the @smithsoniannpg in Washington, DC, in 2018, becoming the first African American woman to receive this honor.⁠ ⁠ In addition to reproductions of Sherald’s recent works, the book—published to accompany her solo exhibition at @hauserwirth London in fall 2022—includes illustrations of earlier paintings, as well as an intimate glimpse into Sherald’s process and practice through a series of in-studio photographs. Jemisin’s The City We Became, which tells the story of New York City’s essence coming to life in human avatars as they battle an opposing force intent on preventing the city’s birth. I really loved TCWB — especially as someone living in Jersey City (IYKYK) — and liked TWWM, although not as much as the first one. . The good stuff: A lot! Jemisin is clever and funny and so smart. I loved spending more time with these hilarious, big-hearted characters. And she just really knows how to write an exciting, engaging story. . Reposted from @kaia.bookworld I cannot rave enough about the conclusion of NK Jemisin's new duology!! From the first book, I found the idea of people inhabiting the essence of cities very intriguing with the big bad trying to impose a discipline in the formation of new cities that human civilization defies by its very existence. In this second book, the battle between good and evil is nothing simple. We see families squabble and come together, tenative alliances form and reform, and strangers come together to protect what unites them. The most surprising element is the love story between two of the main characters that develops subtly and suddenly. I literally reread the last chapter five times just to soak up the unabashed joy of two people finding their way to each other in the aftermath of a cosmic conflict. Beautiful and tender and raw in a way I haven't read in a long time! The worldbuilding is brilliant and inventive and fresh as I've come to expect from this amazing author. The characters are nuanced and their relationships are explored with such empathy that I found myself sympathizing with someone I would never even talk to in real life. This then is the greatness of good writing - it opens up worlds within ourselves that would never be born in its absence. NK Jemisin continues to be an auto-buy for me and I will never stop recommending her work to everyone I meet!!
