Jemma had no intention of staying away forever, but for the time being--she just needed time. Time to figure things out, to come to terms with her grief and her responsibility. The Koenigs helped her find an apartment just far enough away from base that she didn't chance running into anyone, but close enough that she could come running in an emergency.
