Aiden had almost forgotten what it was like to walk around like a normal civilian. Most of his adult life up until recently had been spent in the Navy. Walking around without body armor and a gun made him feel almost naked. Maybe that was why he decided to become a cop.
No, that wasn’t it. He could joke about that being the reason, but it wasn’t. Ever since he was old enough to understand what it meant, he wanted to help people. To protect them. To make the world a better place. That’s why he became a SEAL and that’s why he wore a different uniform now. There were times when he was overseas when he lost his way. Forgot what it was he was fighting for, but one thing brought him back. Letters from a young woman who didn’t know him from Adam, but kept on writing to him so that he knew how much his sacrifice and the sacrifice of men and women like him meant to the people back home.
Now that he was back home, he couldn’t stop thinking about this woman. They’d been pen pals for a long time, and he knew a lot about her. He knew that she worked at a hospital. He knew she had a little girl who was in pre-school if he remembered correctly. He also knew her address by heart, since he searched for it every time he was able to receive mail. That was where he was now. Standing just outside the door with one of the many letters that had been sent to him. A wide range of emotions raged inside of him, from excitement to fear. It was like his first day of training all over again.
Before he could change his mind, he reached up and knocked on the door firmly. Once that was done there was no turning back, so he settled and waited for someone to answer the door.
