what is the saddest dair/derena scene in your opinion?

so, i’m choosing to interpret this as which moments are saddest from a dan perspective because that’s what you asked! as opposed to sad derena moments for serena or sad dair moments for blair. & i’m putting this under the cut because it got long because of the screencaps, haha.

first derena breakup in 1x18!! 

look at his face!!! he looks like he’s going to cry :( 

it’s not just the break-up, it’s everything that led up to it. dan trying his best to be a supportive boyfriend, and serena being dishonest with him again and again. her going to the njbc for help, and not letting dan know ANYTHING about what was happening. i think the breakup makes sense; if you can’t communicate with someone you probably shouldn’t be dating them. but for dan i think it’s The Moment of realising that he can never be what he wants to be for serena, like, he can never be The Man That Serena Needs Him To Be. or something like that. 

the whole dair arc has so much pining, and of course, the events that happen in the season finale & the morning after would’ve been one of the worst for dan, though from what i remember, we don’t really SEE him grieving. i kept thinking on this part of the question, and i found myself thinking of crazy cupid love? specifically, this rejection. right after this, he steps on that candy heart and it snaps into 2, and it’s such an absurd contrast because it’s so SILLY after the rawness of that scene. like??? blair’s rejection of dan is something he can’t argue with, there. he always knew that blair would choose serena over him. the magnitude of blair’s love for serena is what led to the evolution of their friendship!! of course he knows that serena comes first. which means he can’t even ask her to reconsider or do anything about it. he just has to live with it.
