A Tale of Two Children via End Child Detention
The story of a young boy and girl forced to flee their homes, and how detention can be avoided in order to complete their migration status.
4/16 in Ithaca, NY at Cornell University: Precarious Lives - Central American families and the limits of U.S. immigration policy.
In 2014, 60,000 children and mothers fled Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, seeking refuge in the U.S. because of gang threats, domestic violence, and child abuse in their countries. The Obama administration has responded by detaining these families in prison-like conditions for months, many times denying them release on bond and inhibiting their ability to apply for political asylum. A nationwide network of lawyers and activists is organizing to end this practice of family detention and to argue through legal representation that the women and children should be allowed to exercise their internationally recognized rights to live free from violence and persecution. Come and hear about this work through a transnational feminist lens. More information at http://bit.ly/precariouslives

ICYMI: CultureStrike is beginning a long-term process to help replace the existing border symbolism with frames that will be more likely to engender understanding of and support for the immigrant experience in America, which for many begins at the border. This video a recent public event with journalist Oscar Martinez reveals how transnational human stories are integral to understanding the border.
Tears of Sorrow... I live in a country that continues to provide another country with billions of dollars and weapons of war that kill innocent children, women and men. While all of this takes place, this country I live in continues to tell us that they don't have money for educational programs, new schools, health care and social services. This country tells us they don’t have money to house and provide refuge to women and children from Central & South America. This country tells us we're in danger of terrorism and use scare tactics to create divisions among it's citizens. This country does not represent me and my best interest. I am deeply sadden and disappointed in the leaders of this country I live in!
