Hi! I went to download the first mix, but there was only a link to the first half of the mix. How can I download the second half? I really love it and want to listen to it all!

We've pressed pause for the last couple weeks on the daily fan playlist selections after the movie release and all the interest in the official soundtrack and scores. And then last week's spotlight on fanmade Rue's Lullabies, which I'm thrilled to see was a huge hit! 

We'll still be sprinkling score posts in with fanmade features, but we're gonna pivot back to your regularly scheduled programming of fan playlist picks this week. I've got a ton of submissions and new fanmixes sitting in my iTunes ready to be featured. Everyone's minds are still stuck in the 74th HGs so looks like that will be the prevailing theme for the next couple weeks.

REVIEW: Another new arrangement just posted this past week, adrisaurus (first mentioned HERE for her Hanging Tree arrangement) delivers fandom another inspired interpretation of Collins' lyrics. I love that this just feels old, as old as the Scottish hills it sounds like it first came from. She keeps the traditional lullaby tempo for accompaniment, but with the purely folk-derived melody and her vocal choices, adds this truly haunting quality on top of it. Overall, it makes creates one of the most unique arrangements yet. Thanks to onceinspired for submitting it!

REVIEW: I joke that this is the version you would use if you were putting on a Hunger Games: The Musical. The vocalist, Jessie Daniels, does a fantastic job, but her voice is a little too poppy and dramatic to be considered a canonical Rue's Lullaby. But it's a valid and well-done interpretation, with excellent production quality and accompaniment.  And the more I listen to it, I'm not kidding about that musical comment, seriously. I can totally see it, opening with this, as Katniss sings to Prim before the Reaping. (No laughing, musicals can be valid mediums of adaptation. Sometimes.)

COMPARISON TO THE OFFICIAL VERSION: Despite the pop vocals, it does have a slight Gaelic folk bend that makes it more melodically interesting than the official version. But with the background music/sound effects, it becomes a more of a haunting interpretation than a soothing lullaby.

REVIEW: I fell instantly in love this with this melody. She takes Katniss's description of the song ("it is old, very old I think. Made up long ago in our hills. What my music teacher calls a mountain air") and really stays true to it by creating a Gaelic-like folk melody for it. She also has a pitch perfect voice for the tune, and though her recording is accapella, it's flawless. On top of that, it's delivered in a rich tone that I can easily imagine as Katniss's voice ("that made the birds stop and listen"). If I had one quibble, I wish she'd have slowed it down just slightly (so it can be "one we sing fretful, hungry babies to sleep with"). It has a great propulsion for the melody like it is here, but it lacks the tempo of a lullaby and doesn't allow the emotional component to build to it's full potential. It makes me want to campaign for one of the fan composers to team up with her to create an accompaniment and rerecord it in a slower version, because with some very slight changes in approach, it could easily be the most canonically true Rue's Lullaby we have. 

COMPARED TO THE OFFICIAL VERSION: The melody takes on a completely different approach than Burnett's version which stuck to a more simple, anesthetic sounding lullaby. I was very surprised after the soundtrack stayed so true to bluegrass and Appalachia folk sound, none of that felt injected into the song that canonically was written as an old "hill song". Taking on a Gaelic folk ballad bend not only gives it that quality, it makes the tune more melodically complex. The official version's only real win over this version is its lullaby meter/tempo and professional recording quality. Give this girl a couple folk musicians, a slight tempo change, and a recording studio, and she'd have the official version topped in all respects.

It's "Returning Home" part of the "Tenuous Winners/Returning Home" track on the Howard score compilation, and starts at 1:21 in. I'll be uploading a clip of this momentarily, but quick question for the HG masses, has anyone found where "Tenuous Winners" the first part of that track, is played in the movie? I have a hunch it was score made in an earlier cut of the film, before the Marissa's Flashback was put in its place, and isn't actually in the film at all. But it's just a hunch, so anyone that thinks they've heard it somewhere else, feel free to message me.

My apologies to those who have sent in submissions in the last week, we've taken a hiatus with all the movie score questions, but hope to get back to them at some point this week.

 You really got to stop and appreciate the creative genius of Gary Ross with this. To choose [this] sound for such a key moment, the biggest bloodbath in the whole film...[is] a remarkable show of restraint few directors would want or allow. Just one of the many stylistic choices made for this film that made it so memorable.
