Hand-written playlist for a mix tape I made for a friend, early 1991.
This mix tape practically screams: “LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THIS NEW ZEALAND LABEL CALLED FLYING NUN” and “IMPRESSING YOU WITH MY KNOWLEDGE OF GO-BETWEENS DEEP CUTS.” I mean, just my usual 2021 1991 musical obsessions.
As compared to my Flying Nun mix tape made a year earlier, this one shows I’d progressed beyond In Love With These Times and into the back catalogs of my favorite bands from that comp. And while those two non-album Go-Betweens tracks were from a relatively recent comp, 1978-1990, I also threw in some Jack Frost (Grant McLennan, with Church frontman Steve Kilbey), solo Robert Forster and Grant again in the form of the producer of that Club Hoy 7″.
The only real surprise here is the mystery track labeled “surprise instrumental break.” What is it!? I have no clue, and as I did give this tape away, I suppose I never will.
