I’m not gonna lie, it took me a while to warm up to Steward. From his issues with personal space to his eagerness to ingratiate himself, I wasn’t sure what to think of him at first.
As the show went on and I got some chance to read people’s takes on him and develop and write my own, I slowly grew to understand and like him more. But there is a very distinct point at which I fell desperately, hopelessly in love with this labrador puppy of a hologram, and that’s when I read Thimblerig’s brilliant fic “Your Shadow at Morning.”
I still remember sitting in the back of my parents’ car, driving home from my sisters’, and trying not to snort too loudly, because otherwise I’d have to explain to them that the thing that made me laugh was Steward diagnosing Rios with “You need to get laid” (and Rios replying: “Why, are you volunteering?” WHAT A FIC!!!)
So, if you, too, feel ambiguous about La Sirena’s Emergency Hospitality Hologram, may I recommend you give this little fable a go? Thimblerig even recorded one of her brilliant podfics for it!
And while you’re at it, go give the other Steward fics some love. There’s some truly gorgeous writing out there!
