Comments from my first years on their finals:
At first, I decided that English was difficult and I didn’t really like it. But as I learned what words meant, and how to read and write, I started to like it a lot. I want to write a lot of English, and get to the point where I can write it easily like a pro. I think English is difficult but it’s really fun. As long as it’s fun I think I can learn a lot of things. I’ll try hard from now on. (From one of the class clowns who’s really come to love English.)
You need English when you grow up, and you can use it in other countries, so I think English is important. I like English personally, so I will try harder to study hard and understand English. (From one of the kids struggling with English.)
Just like midterms, I didn’t really study much for finals. I played with my friends a lot, but I also just didn’t feel like studying and just played games by myself and read books. I think it’s “okay” and don’t really try hard, but from now on I’ll try to do better. (And this kid got a 92/100. He’s like I was in school.)
I make mistakes with forgetting words and spelling errors, so I want to practice writing every day in my notebook. I like English, and I think it’ll be fun if I learn to speak it, so I’ll study on my own and try to get perfect scores on quizzes and tests!
I saw Yuzuru Hanyu skating on TV not too long ago. I didn’t really have a lot of interest in skating before, but once I saw him skate I was really moved. I’m getting more interested in it, so I decided to look at a lot of videos with various skaters in them. It was really cool that kids my age were performing on a world stage, so I think I want to follow them from now on. I think I understand why JTE-sensei is interested in skating now. (My JTE always talks about figure skating in class, it’s kind of become a joke now.)
I’m not very good at English, so I was really nervous about English class in middle school. But I passed all my quizzes in a row, and I’m confident about reading English too. I want to work hard so I get good at English. (From a girl who got a 99.)
One student wrote about ballet.
I like English, so I want to get even better at it. I want to be like JTE-sensei where I can speak it fluently. I couldn’t get 100 on midterms, but I want to study hard so I can get 100.
English class is always fun. And it’s easy to understand, so I can understand all the grammar points quickly. I want to try my best in English.
Look at that mountain of crazy people!
Oh, I'll join them!!

- essay portion of midterm from a student that usually does not try this hard
I was really glad to see him writing like this, even though it had mistakes! It always makes me happy to see students trying their best.
Today's first year exercise: "Write a diary entry". We said they could make something up.
I got this.
I went to angel’s home with Z. I played dangerous games. Z died in 2014 March 19 10 o’clock.
When I asked the student about it: "We went up to heaven and played some really dangerous games, but Z lost so he died."
On our second year's final exams today, there was a story about a boy and his grandfather. It was super sad, with the boy breaking a promise to the grandfather, then the grandfather getting sick, then the boy apologizing and everything being happy.
Except the next day, the grandfather died. God dammit.
I got the best answer ever out of it, though. In the story, the grandfather gets the kid a racket.
Question: What did his grandfather get for him?
Correct answer: He got him a racket.
Answer Student T wrote: He got sick.
I just about lost my shit.
