Pastéis de nata. Known to English speakers as a Portuguese custard tart. If you’ve never had one let me describe it to you, layers of very crisp, thin pastry containing a light, slightly sweet, smooth custard with a skin on top burned black. It is impossible to describe how delicious these tarts are, they’re not really sugary just gently sweet and best eaten in two bites before the pastry crumbles. In Jersey, where I live there is a significant Portuguese population so these tarts are readily available. When I told people I was coming to Lisbon everyone said to have a pastel de nata here on the basis that they taste much better here. I didn’t really believe them but oh dear, how wrong I was! I visited Pastés de Belém, the most famous bakery where you can watch the tarts being made. It was crazy busy with tourists but is a beautiful building decorated inside and out with traditional blue and white tiles. I recommend a visit but be prepared to queue! The staff were really efficient and the coffee was good. . . . . . #pasteisdenata #pasteisdebelém #pasteldenata #portuguesecustardtarts #deliciousness #lisboa #thingstodoinlisbon #igtraveller #digitalhumanbeans #wanderlustercrew #realtravel #thisanxiousadventurer #instagood #instafoodtravel (at Pastéis de Belém - Página Oficial)
