Silly times at the Botanic Gardens, Sydney
Family Cruising- Sydney
It’s incredible that the family cruise is already over! There was so much to do and see and I am TIRED. Those people took up all of my nap time! Cause they could nap while I was at work. I guarantee that as soon as my family leaves I am getting a cold of some kind.
That being said, I had a really good time with them! We laughed and chatted and bonded and it was such fun to have them here, to see my shows and get to spend time with them!
It just makes me want to go home all the more. Fortunately it is only a few weeks away!
For our last Sydney we dropped the bags off at the new hotel and went in search of breakfast! We walked 12min from our hotel to The Bean Brewers which is a small little café with AMAZING food!
I got a vegetarian breakfast with falafel, snap peas, and incredible hummus and aioli, avocado and an egg on top. It was fantastic!
Sam got a simple breakfast roll and mom an avocado smash and they were both incredible.
We stayed for a bit and used the free wifi in search of what to do for the day. The original idea was a tree-top adventure but my back on board time being a very early 2:45 we decided that was too far away.
We settled on the most bizarre thing we could find: Ice Skating on Bondi Beach in July.
Yes, I know that July is Aussie winter but that doesn’t make it sound less weird to my northern-hemisphere ears.
And we were on a beach!!
The ice rink was quite small and the fee was a whopping 22AUS per person for an hour but as a family- we really love ice skating. And we were doing it on Bondi Beach- totally worth it!
Mom used to take figure skating and it came back to her fairly quickly- soon she was weaving around all the people. We skated for about 45min before we grew tired of the circle and decided to explore the beach.
We walked past all the graffiti and found a perfect on for Sam.
And then started to head up to the lookout point.
Of course it was a little too far so we settled for a lovely view of the surfers and the ocean on some rocks that jutted out from the path.
We still had nearly an hour before I needed to head back to the ship so we went to Oxford street and looked for books at Harry Hartogs in the Westfield mall.
Sam is going to teach the 3rd grade this year and wanted an Australian book for her classroom.
Fortunately they had a whole section of Australian kids books! And she found a few great ones. Sadly it was time to say goodbye. But only a few more weeks and I’ll be relaxing at home again.
Family Cruising- Sydney
My family was staying at The Mercantile hotel right on The Rocks ( right next to the ship) It’s a hotel above a bar but it’s super duper close and that was the important thing. It meant that I was able to meet them almost as soon as the ship docked!
The first thing we did was Pancakes on the Rocks. Which was delicious.
We headed over to the Opera House to do important Sydney things like take pictures of the harbor
The bridge
And, obviously, the Opera House.
Conveniently, the Royal Botanic Gardens is right next to the Opera House! Since they needed to board the ship at 2pm I thought this was the perfect place to explore and stay close to the ship!
We first walked along the bay to Mrs. Macquarie’s chair.
A stone bench carved out for the first Mayor’s Wife so she could look out on the bay.
We wandered inward to the garden. And mom was very excited about all the bees
We found a flower exhibit that was free!
And were able to look at the leaves and things close up….
Sure some of it was meant for children but pshhhhh
It’s definitely winter in Sydney which is almost exactly like winter in Tucson. So we decided to take a break from the not-so-bitter slight chill and get some chocolate from Guylian.
This is a delicious chocolatier just off the main drag on The Rocks. Their pastries are delcisous only made more delicious by their hot chocolate. Just hit the perfect spot! So good!
We finished our day around Sydney with the Rocks Market. It’s open every Saturday and Sunday but we rarely dock on such fortuitous days. It’s a big open air market with all kinds of wares
There is clothing, soaps, art, snacks, food, wood carvings. Anything and everything you could want.
After we made our rounds- and some purchases- we heard about another market across the bridge! We had time to check it out.
It was not as big or fancy as the rocks but it still had some really cute items! It was more clothing/ vintage based.
Finally it was time to get on the ship and sail away!
